The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has congratulated the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on the celebration of this year’s Press Week, describing the theme, “2027 Election:
Defending Democracy in the Era of Disinformation,” as timely and critical to Nigeria’s democratic development.

In a goodwill message delivered on behalf of the National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the NDPC, Vincent Olatunji, the Commission noted that the rise of digital platforms has significantly transformed the way information is created, shared, and consumed, making the role of the media more important than ever.
The Commission commended journalists and media professionals for their continued dedication to responsible journalism, fact-checking, and public enlightenment, especially at a time when disinformation poses serious threats to public trust and democratic processes.

NDPC also urged media practitioners to pay greater attention to data protection and privacy during news gathering and reporting.

According to the Commission, ethical handling of personal data, respect for privacy rights, and compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023 are essential to building a safe, lawful, and credible information ecosystem.
As the country prepares for the 2027 general elections, the Commission reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with the media to promote data protection, digital literacy, and responsible information practices aimed at curbing misinformation and safeguarding the integrity of the nation’s information space.
