FG seeks greater Women involvement in Peace, Security decision making

Speaking in Yola at the opening of a two-day stakeholders’ consultative meeting, the minister said government at all levels have been mandated to involve women in peace meetings for sustainable development.

Stakeholders in peace building from four local government areas of Adamawa State attended the meeting to lend their voices to how women can contribute to peace and stability of the state.

In her opening speech, the minister disclosed that the programme was designed and supported by the European Union and the federal Ministry of Women Affairs as well as the Governments of Adamawa, Gombe and Plateau to
provide a conducive environment for the implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 in Nigeria.

The minister who was represented by official of Federal Ministry of women affairs Hauwa Mustapha noted that in line with the objective of the Programme, the ministry represents the aspirations of Nigerian women to actively participate in the achievement of peace and security.

According to her, the ministry and the participating states are working tirelessly to build strong alliances and perfect strategies to improve women’s engagement in peace and security.

Governor Jubrilla Bindow of Adamawa state, In his remarks, said his administration would continue to partner with all progressive groups towards promoting women’s engagement in peace and security in northern Nigeria.

Bindow , who was represented by the permanent Secretary in the ministry of special duties, Arin Lutu observed that no nation could make meaningful progress if her women were marginalised in the scheme of things.

Peter Mancha, Deputy Programme manager of the project explained that the core objective of the meeting was to review the Adamawa peace architecture and involvement of women in peace and security decision making and implementation.

Mancha said four local government areas were selected in Adamawa state for the Programme.

He listed the Council areas as Numan, Maiha, Mubi South and Yola North.

Events watchers say the zeal demonstrated by the Buhari administration in encouraging women’s participation in peace building will reap immediate benefits.
