The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the death of a notorious armed robber and assassin, identified as Saater of Wannune in Tarka Local Government Area, who had long been on the police wanted list for multiple murders, including the killing of the Hunters’ Commander, Mr. Aondoakaa Yayol.

In a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, the police said the suspect was implicated in the murder of Mr. Yayol on June 20, 2025, and the earlier killing of his wife, Mrs. Kashimana Yayol, on February 11, 2023, both in Wannune.

Following the crimes, Saater reportedly fled the area and had been in hiding.

According to the statement, intelligence gathered on October 18, 2025, revealed that the suspect had resurfaced in Makurdi and was planning fresh attacks. Acting on the tip-off, police operatives launched a manhunt and intercepted him along George Akume Way in the state capital.

“Upon sighting the operatives, the suspect opened fire, and the officers responded immediately. In the ensuing gun battle, he was subdued and arrested,” the statement said.

The police added that Saater sustained gunshot wounds during the exchange and was taken to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, where he was later confirmed dead. His remains have been deposited at the hospital morgue.

Recovered from the suspect were an AK-47 rifle, a locally made short gun, several rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition, cartridges, and seven SIM cards suspected to have been stolen.
