Tobi Amusan Breaks Meet Record, Wins 100m Hurdles in Rabat

Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan delivered a stunning performance in the women’s 100-metre hurdles at the Diamond League meeting in Rabat, clocking a season-best 12.24 seconds to claim her first major victory of the year.

The 28-year-old reigning African champion smashed the previous meet record of 12.51 seconds set by American hurdler Brianna McNeal, underlining her return to peak form after a difficult run of results.

Amusan’s dominant display in Morocco follows a rocky start to her 2025 Diamond League campaign, where she finished fourth in both Xiamen and Shanghai, showing promise but falling short of the podium. She had earlier secured a comfortable win at Velocity Fest 16 in Jamaica in March, although that victory came against a relatively modest field.

Sunday’s win marks a significant turnaround for Amusan, whose 2024 season ended in disappointment after she failed to reach the final at the Paris Olympics—a rare blemish on an otherwise stellar career.

Reflecting on her record-breaking run, Amusan credited recent adjustments to her training regime, particularly an increased focus on technical drills.

“More hurdles practice, because I have been doing more sprinting,” she explained. “It was after the first two Diamond League meetings, I knew I had to go back to doing more hurdle drills.”

The performance not only sets a new benchmark for the Rabat meet but also reaffirms Amusan’s status as one of the top contenders heading into the peak of the 2025 athletics season.
