The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved a fresh round of promotions for 775 senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force, following a nationwide exercise that involved written examinations and oral interviews.

The promotion exercise was concluded on December 17 at the commission’s headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, under the supervision of the PSC Chairman, retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Hashimu Salihu Argungu.

Among those elevated is Mohammed Usman Gumel, who moved from the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police to Deputy Inspector-General of Police. Before his promotion, Gumel headed the Community Policing Project in the Department of Research and Planning at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The commission also promoted seven Commissioners of Police to the rank of Assistant Inspectors-General of Police. They include Ihebom Chukwuma of the Force Criminal Investigation Department, Maxwell Olatokunbo of the K9 unit, Abaniwonda Olufemi of Delta State Command, Alonyenu Francis Idu of Bayelsa State Command, Lawal B. Ayodeji of the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, Agene Emmanuel of FCID Kaduna, and Vungmoh S. M. Kwaimo of the Railway Command.

In addition, 13 Deputy Commissioners of Police were elevated to Commissioners of Police, while 30 Assistant Commissioners of Police were promoted to the rank of Deputy Commissioners.

The PSC further approved the promotion of 51 Chief Superintendents of Police to Assistant Commissioners of Police, and 542 Superintendents of Police to Chief Superintendents of Police across various commands and formations nationwide.

Also promoted were 119 Deputy Superintendents of Police to Superintendents of Police, alongside 12 Assistant Superintendents of Police who moved up to the rank of Deputy Superintendent.

A statement issued in Abuja by the Head of Protocol and Public Affairs of the commission, Torty Njoku Kalu, said the promotions were based strictly on merit and performance during the exercise.

Congratulating the officers, PSC Chairman Argungu urged them to see their elevation as a call to greater responsibility and service to the nation. He charged them to demonstrate professionalism, integrity and renewed commitment to effective policing, protection of lives and property, and the maintenance of law and order.

Argungu reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to regular and merit-driven promotions in line with best practices in public service.
