Police and education authorities in Akwa-Ibom State have intensified efforts to curb a concerning rise in fake news and cyber-related misconduct among secondary school students.
The move follows a series of hoax security alerts and online scams traced to teenagers.
At a meeting that brought together security officials and every secondary school principal in Akwa Ibom State, police warned that a new kind of threat is emerging inside classrooms.
The concerns raised are related to students fabricating fake news, editing misleading videos, and spreading false security alerts on social media, describing it as the new frontier of juvenile crime.
The meeting came just days after a 15-year-old student in Oron created a fake kidnap alert that spread across social media.
Police have ordered tighter supervision of students’ digital activity, more school patrols, and expanded safety committees.
TVC previously reported that the Akwa Ibom State Police Command has announced a series of new measures aimed at tightening internal discipline and improving public safety across the state.
The directives followed a strategic meeting chaired by the State Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare.
In the briefing, the Commissioner expressed concern over the growing number of officers escorting private individuals and politicians without approval from Force Headquarters.
