The Council of Legal Education (CLE) has published a list of 114 universities authorised to run law programmes in Nigeria, warning institutions against admitting students into the course without its approval.

In a circular issued on Friday, the council said only universities on the approved list are permitted to admit students into the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme.

The circular, signed by Aderonke Osho, Secretary to the Council and Director of Administration, cautioned that any institution running a law programme without approval would be violating the regulations governing legal education in the country.

“The public is further informed that any university that admits students into a Law programme without the approval of the Council of Legal Education is acting contrary to the provisions regulating legal education in Nigeria and will be subject to appropriate sanctions in accordance with extant regulations and policy,” the circular stated.

The council also warned prospective students to verify the accreditation status of universities before seeking admission into law programmes.

According to the CLE, students who study law in institutions that are not approved by the council will not be eligible for admission into the Nigerian Law School.

The body noted that the list of accredited universities would be updated periodically as part of its mandate to regulate legal education and maintain standards in the profession.
