The Lagos State Police Command has recorded a major breakthrough in its fight against violent crime with the arrest of a notorious armed robbery suspect, John Samuel, believed to be the mastermind behind the recent daylight attack on a businessman in Ikeja.

According to a statement by the Lagos Police Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Babaseyi Oluseyi, 28-year-old Samuel, an ex-convict from Akwa Ibom State, was apprehended on September 19, 2025, in his hideout in Epe following an intelligence-led operation by police operatives.

The suspect was linked to the August 18, 2025, armed robbery on Gbajobi Street, Allen Avenue, where a businessman, identified as Gbenga Obama, was shot and robbed of an expensive gold necklace and other valuables. CCTV footage from the scene captured the moment Samuel, armed with an English pistol, fired at the victim before fleeing with an accomplice who waited on a motorcycle.

The victim, who sustained gunshot wounds, has since been treated and discharged from the hospital.

Investigations revealed that Samuel, who had only recently been released from prison after serving a six-year sentence for armed robbery, resumed criminal activities shortly after his release. He is said to be known for his violent approach — often shooting victims before robbing them.

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to selling the stolen gold necklace for ₦4 million, significantly below its actual market value. Police say efforts are ongoing to apprehend other members of his gang.

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohudare Jimoh, commended the officers involved in the operation for their bravery and diligence. He assured residents that a thorough investigation is underway and that all those connected to the crime will face justice.

“The Command reiterates its unwavering commitment to the safety and security of all Lagosians. Criminal elements must understand that Lagos offers no safe haven for crime,” the statement read.

Residents have been encouraged to go about their lawful activities without fear, as the Command continues to intensify efforts to rid the state of violent criminals.
