The Lagos State House of Assembly has moved forward with deliberations on a new tenancy bill aimed at addressing concerns affecting both tenants and property owners across the state.

According to a statement shared via the official X handle of the Lagos State Government, the proposed tenancy legislation is currently at the committee stage in the House of Assembly and is expected to introduce reforms to ease persistent challenges in the housing sector.
The government stated, “The Lagos State House of Assembly is working on a new tenancy bill that will address all concerned issues and relieve tenants and homeowners of their concerns. Currently, the tenancy bill is at Committee Stage at the House of Assembly.”
The disclosure formed part of broader updates from the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA) on ongoing efforts to strengthen regulation, professionalism and transparency within the real estate sector in Lagos.
The state government noted that the proposed bill is expected to provide a clearer legal framework for tenancy relations, improve dispute resolution mechanisms and support a more balanced relationship between landlords, tenants and property agents.
The update comes amid growing public conversations around rising rent costs, tenancy agreements, agency charges and housing accessibility in Lagos.
In addition to the tenancy bill, the government highlighted several initiatives undertaken by LASRERA, including stakeholder engagements across the 57 Local Government and Local Council Development Areas, awareness campaigns across the IBILE divisions, and intensified enforcement against fraudulent and unregistered real estate practitioners operating in the state.
The statement added that the agency recently sealed the office of an unregistered real estate operator in the Owutu area of Ikorodu as part of ongoing enforcement activities aimed at sanitising the sector.
LASRERA also reiterated the need for residents to patronise only registered and certified estate agents in order to reduce exposure to fraudulent practices in the property market.
