The Inspector General of Police has ordered the immediate deployment of gun boats to the creeks in the Lagos and Ogun areas as security operations continue towards the release of the kidnapped students in Lagos.
The boats which will come on stream in 2 months time, will be manned by the marine police operatives.
Speaking at a meeting between him and the senior officers of the force, IGP Idris expressed his concern with the security challenges, most worrisome of which are threats and counter threats by socio-cultural groups to evict people of certain ethnic groups from their homestead.
Although the Kaduna State Governor has called for the arrest of the members of the Arewa Youth group behind the threat to expel the enthnic Igbos from Northern Nigeria, no arrests have been made.
Another issue of concern to the meeting is the kidnap of the Lagos School students whose parents are accusing the government of negligence in getting their kids back.
On the recent armed robbery attack on Banks and the Police Station in IWO, Osun State, the Police Chief ordered the Commissioners of Police to tighten security at police formations.
The meeting soon after the opening session, went into a closed session to afford the police chiefs evolve strategies in crime fighting.
