The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has officially announced the end of its latest Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak, which was initially declared on September 4, 2025.
By November 30, 2025, the outbreak had resulted in 64 reported cases, 53 confirmed and 11 probable, across six health zones, claiming 45 lives. No new confirmed cases have been recorded since the last one on September 25, 2025.
In a statement, the World Health Organization (WHO) explained that the outbreak was declared over after two consecutive incubation periods—42 days in total—passed following the last confirmed patient testing negative and being discharged on October 19, 2025.
The WHO, in collaboration with partners, provided technical, operational, and financial support to help the government control the outbreak.

The organisation added that “risk communication and community engagement activities will continue to provide accurate information, monitor and address community feedback and rumours, and support efforts to reduce stigma toward individuals affected by the outbreak.”
Ebola virus disease is a severe illness caused by the Ebola virus (EBOV). The virus initially spreads to humans through contact with the blood or bodily fluids of infected wildlife and can then transmit between humans via direct contact with fluids, organs, or contaminated surfaces.
Symptoms often begin with sudden fever and non-specific signs such as abdominal pain, fatigue, and loss of appetite. These are frequently followed by nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and sometimes a rash.
In severe cases, patients may experience bleeding, encephalopathy, shock, multi-organ failure, or miscarriage in infected pregnant women. Previous outbreaks have reported case fatality rates ranging from 25 to 90 percent.
