Britain’s vote to leave the European Union has cast a shadow over the future of Europe’s fishermen who fear that the British government could take control of the fish-rich waters around the British Isles and kick Europeans out of their patch.
The French fisherman’s association says if the English were to close their waters overnight, the loss of revenue for the European fleet would be around 50 percent, with an impact on wages of 15 percent.
The EU currently sets each country’s catch under its Common Fisheries Policy and Britain’s fishermen believe they have not been given their fair share of the fish.
EU quota shares have given 84 percent of the cod in the English Channel to France for the last 34 years and just 9 percent to Britain.
