The House of Representatives has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to rescind an Executive Order on gun licence ban.

Instead, the legislators call on the president to sign the bill on the establishment of a commission against the proliferation of small arms and light weapons into law.

National Assembly Correspondent, Joke Adisa, reports that on the 22nd of May, President Muhamamdu Buhari reportedly signed an
Executive Order to remove, ban, revoke and banish all firearm certificates and licenses throughout the country.

The Order is slated to come into effect this Saturday, 1st of June. But these lawmakers have risen stoutly against the President’s action.

While they agreed there is need for all concerned to stem the tide of insecurity, the lawmakers insist the order contravenes constitutional
provisions. They said banning the use of legally acquired guns will only give room for illegal weapons to thrive

The legislators are unanimous in their call for the creation of a commission that will be saddled with the task of mopping up illegal arms
and ammunition in the country.  And since the bill awaits the President’s signature, they want him to assent to the bill without further delay.
