Reactions have continued to trail the birthday message directed at Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, by Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi. His message, which contained a sharp criticism of her call for donations to the National Library in place of traditional cakes and gifts, has sparked widespread debate across social media.

The First Lady marked her 65th birthday on Sunday. Many Nigerians, political leaders, and monarchs celebrated her with glowing tributes online, describing her as a symbol of strength and selfless service.

However, Peter Obi took a different approach. Posting just minutes before the end of the day, the former Anambra State governor extended brief birthday wishes before questioning the First Lady’s request. He described it as “an indictment of the nation,” suggesting it was ironic that Nigeria had to rely on birthday donations to complete a critical national institution like the library.

Obi wrote on his official X account:
“On the surface, it is noble and selfless. But beneath it lies an indictment of our nation. While billions are easily found for jets, yachts, unused mansions, endless trips abroad, and other frivolities, the nation must rely on birthday donations to complete its own National Library.”

The statement quickly went viral, prompting heated reactions from Nigerians.

Mixed Reactions from Social Media Users

An X user, @JohnJoseph074, accused Obi of recycling campaign rhetoric, writing: “Peter Obi loves reminding us he’s the only one who sees Nigeria’s problems clearly, but this library sermon sounds more like old campaign lines than real solutions.”

Another user, @felyx06, criticised Obi harshly, calling him “immature” and accusing him of desperation. Similarly, @CorruptionIzBad faulted Obi’s record in Anambra, claiming his government failed to prioritise education and abandoned key projects.

Others, like @gabriel_bolatit and @adewalefajana, argued that Obi’s criticism was misplaced and poorly timed. Some went further, accusing his media handlers of worsening his public image.

Not all reactions were negative. Some users defended the essence of his argument, insisting that public institutions like the National Library should not depend on private donations or birthday gestures. Yet, critics argued Obi could have delivered his message without attaching it to the First Lady’s birthday.
