President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to Chief Bisi Akande, former governor of Osun State and founding National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as he marks his 87th birthday.
The President in a statement he personally signed described Chief Akande as an elder statesman whose contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development and the progressive political movement remain enduring and significant.
The President said Chief Akande, inspired by the political philosophy of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, began his professional life as an accountant with British Petroleum before venturing into public service, where he built a distinguished political career.
He recalled that Akande served as Secretary to the State Government in the old Oyo State in 1979, later became Deputy Governor during the Second Republic, and was eventually elected Governor of Osun State between 1999 and 2003.
President Tinubu also highlighted Chief Akande’s role as Interim National Chairman of the APC, noting that he laid the foundation for the party’s structure and unity, which culminated in the historic victory that unseated an incumbent federal government in 2015.
He praised Akande’s leadership, integrity and commitment to progressive ideals, describing him as a mentor, adviser and source of inspiration throughout his own political journey.
The President expressed gratitude for Chief Akande’s continued support for his administration and for the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda, adding that his guidance and encouragement had been invaluable.
Despite his age, President Tinubu noted that Chief Akande remains an energetic advocate for democracy, social justice and good governance.
He concluded by praying for good health and renewed strength for the elder statesman as he celebrates his 87th birthday.
