The Imo State Police Command has confirmed the assassination of the Labour Party State House of Assembly Candidate for Onuimo LGA, Christopher Eleghu by yet to be identified gunmen at the early hours of Friday.

Confirming the incident, the Command’s public relations officer, Michael Abattam said the police is on the trail of the hoodlums who committed the heinous crime.
The attackers invaded the house of the Labour party house of Assembly Candidate at Umuocheke in Onuimo Local Government Area where they shot him, burnt down his house and cars

The sad development is coming amidst a recent resurgence of attacks by suspected members of the Eastern Security Network(ESN) and IPOB.

This is yet another development which adds to the growing number of attacks and deaths in Imo State which seemed to have been particularly under the siege of the So called unknown gunmen who have mounted a campaign of Terror, killing, maiming and burning peoples property and that of Government.

The So called Unknown gunmen have also been fingered in the attack on the Imo Correctional Facility in Owerri earlier in the year where many people died.

The Unknown gunmen who are at times a nickname for the armed wing of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra popularly known as Eastern Security Network who the Police and Other Security agencies have always fingered in such attacks, though the group has always denied involvement in the attacks.

The group has also allegedly attacked the country home of the Imo State governor, Hope Uzodinma, and the President General of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide, Professor George Obiozor.

This killing allegedly committed by the unknown gunmen will come to many as a surprise and may mark a new escalation by the group which according to Security agencies is the armed wing of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra though the group disagree.

The unknown gunmen were also fingered in several attacks over the last few months especially in enforcing the Sit At Home prescribed by the group to protest the continued detention of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
