The Ondo State Police Command has arrested Tom Samuel, a student of Adekunle Ajasin University in Akungba-Akoko, along with an accomplice, for allegedly raping a female schoolmate.
The incident reportedly took place on Friday, November 21, 2024, at Cele Street, Akungba.
It was gathered that the suspect allegedly drugged the victim with an alcoholic substance, leaving her unconscious during the assault.
Dr. Gbademosi O.B., Medical Director of the General Hospital, Iwaro-Oka, confirmed the rape following tests conducted on November 22, 2024. A video captured moments when friends of the victim entered the room and discovered Samuel and the unconscious victim.
Spokesperson of the State police command, Ayanlade Olayinka Olushola confirmed the arrests in a press statement issued on Monday, stating that the Commissioner of Police has directed the case to be transferred to the Gender Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough investigation.
“The Ondo State Police Command has successfully arrested two students of Adekunle Ajasin University in connection with a conspiracy and rape case involving a 20-year-old female student of the same institution,” Olushola stated.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim had been invited to the residence of her long-time friend, Queen Sodo, also a student at the university. Trusting their long-standing friendship, the victim accepted a drink from Sodo, which turned out to be drug-laced, causing her to lose consciousness.
Reports indicated that once the victim was incapacitated, Sodo allegedly called her male accomplice to the room and monitored the situation as the crime was perpetrated.
A neighbor, alerted by unusual noises, intervened and discovered the victim in a compromising position with Samuel. She was promptly taken for urgent medical care and has since been referred to a specialist hospital for further treatment.
Both suspects have confessed to their involvement and provided details of their roles in the crime. Police recovered relevant evidence from the scene, including the drug-laced drink, which will undergo toxicology testing.
The suspects are currently in custody, awaiting transfer to the Gender Desk Office in Akure for further investigation and prosecution.
The Ondo State Police Command assured the public that all offenders, regardless of their relationship with victims, will be held accountable under the law.
