The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his 74th birthday, commending his leadership and transformative interventions aimed at improving the welfare of retirees across the country.
In a statement signed by Comrade Elder Godwin Abumisi, National President of NUP, the union described the milestone as not only a celebration of age but also of purposeful leadership, courage, and commitment to national development.
The union particularly praised the President’s approval of a ₦32,000 monthly pension increase for all pensioners, describing it as a bold and compassionate decision that has provided relief amid rising living costs.
NUP also highlighted the administration’s release of approximately ₦700 billion to settle outstanding liabilities under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) and N57 billion for the Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS), noting that these interventions are addressing years of uncertainty for retirees.
The statement further commended the government’s timely payment of arrears to various pensioners, including those in government parastatals, as well as the sustained prompt payment of monthly pensions, which NUP said reflects responsive and people-centered leadership.
The union also acknowledged the recent approval for gratuity payments to retired workers and ongoing efforts to introduce a health insurance scheme and other social protection initiatives for pensioners.
While celebrating these achievements, NUP urged the President to ensure that state governors fully implement approved pension increases for subnational retirees and to expedite the rollout of the proposed Health Insurance Scheme.
The union concluded by praying for the President’s continued health, wisdom, and strength to sustain his reform agenda and national development efforts.
