Residents of Judges Estate, Alagbaka, Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Monday stormed the headquarters of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) to protest what they described as worsening power supply to their community.
The protesters, who locked the company’s gate during the peaceful demonstration, accused BEDC officials of disconnecting their estate from the Alagbaka power line which provided them an average of 16 hours of electricity daily.
Speaking on behalf of the residents, Chairman of the Landlords Association of the estate, Ade Adegboro, alleged that BEDC technicians misled the community with promises of 24-hour electricity supply.
He added that several letters of complaint had been sent to the company’s offices in Benin and Lagos without any positive response.
Despite repeated pleas, BEDC officials at the Akure office declined to address the protesters or speak to journalists, instead directing the estate to forward yet another formal letter
