Prominent Nigerian industrialist Oskar Eyovbirere Ibru has died at the age of 67, prompting an outpouring of tributes from political and business leaders across the country.

The billionaire businessman, who chaired the Ibru Organisation, died on 24 September after a brief illness. Born on 11 August 1958, he was the eldest son of the late Michael Ibru and played a pivotal role in expanding the family’s interests in shipping, oil and gas, real estate and philanthropy.

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori described Ibru’s death as “a monumental loss to the Urhobo nation and Nigeria at large”. In a statement issued through his Chief Press Secretary, Oborevwori commiserated with the Ibru family of Agbarha-Otor, the people of Delta State and the Urhobo nation, urging them to take solace in the late businessman’s enduring legacy of love, enterprise and generosity.

He praised Ibru for building strong economic institutions, providing employment to thousands and supporting development projects across Delta State and beyond. “He lived a life of service to humanity,” the governor said, praying for the repose of his soul.

Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo also mourned the industrialist, describing him as “an epitome of humility and grace”. In a condolence message posted on social media, Keyamo said he was saddened by the death of “a great son of Delta” and extended heartfelt sympathies to the Ibru family and the people of the state.

Oskar Ibru, whose business empire and philanthropy spanned several sectors, was widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most influential private sector leaders. His passing marks the end of an era for the Ibru dynasty, which has shaped commerce and development in Delta State and across the nation for decades.
