North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met with Russian security director Sergei Shoigu during his visit to the nuclear-armed country, Pyongyang’s state media claimed on Saturday.

Shoigu’s travel comes as Moscow seeks ammunition to prolong its more than 30-month offensive in Ukraine, and the West accuses Pyongyang of supplying weapons to Moscow.

President Vladimir Putin visited North Korea in June and inked a mutual defense treaty with the isolated country.

Kim “affirmed that the DPRK government would further expand cooperation and collaboration” with Russia based on the treaty signe in June, according to the statement.

Russia’s security council also stated on its website that Shoigu’s meeting with Kim will “make an important contribution to the implementation” of the defense treaty.

Shoigu, who resigned as Russia’s defense minister in May, now leads the Security Council.

Moscow has had historical links with Pyongyang since the Soviet Union helped build North Korea, but relations have improved since the commencement of the 2022 Ukraine offensive, which severed ties with the West.
