The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA in Ondo State has warned against the increasing rate of drug abuse among youths urging parents to monitor their wards closely.

The Agency gave the warning at a sensitisaton walk organised the centre for gender issues and technology of the federal university of technology, Akure.

Studies show that the burden of drug abuse in Nigeria is still high, despite existing laws, policies and strategies to tackle the menace.

Statistics from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA reveal that 40 per cent of Nigerian youths between 18 and 35 years, are involved in abuse of drugs.

The need to educate mothers and members of the public against drug abuse necessitated this walk.

It was organised by the Centre for Gender in Science and Technology at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, in conjunction with the NDLEA.

The participants moved from the gate of the university campus, through Ilesha garage to Oba Adesida road in Akure.

The walk was put together to mark the international women’s day celebrated in March, which was postponed due to the 2023 general election.

With placards and flyers in their hands, they described drug abuse as an evil tormenting the society

The NDLEA said regular sensitisation will go a long way in reducing drug abuse in the society.

The walk terminated at the popular Oja Oba Market in Akure, where traders also participated in the exercise.
