The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the arrest of a Togolese driver involved in a high-speed crash that left a pedestrian critically injured at the Adeniji Adele intersection, inward Ilubirin, Lagos Island.

According to a statement by the Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, the accident occurred earlier today when the driver of a Mazda vehicle, with registration number EPE 749 GS, was reportedly driving at an unlawful speed.

The motorist lost control and struck a pedestrian who was attempting to cross the road, resulting in severe injuries and extensive bleeding.

Eyewitnesses reported that the driver attempted to flee the scene, but was swiftly pursued and apprehended by LASTMA officials.

The suspect was subsequently handed over to officers at the Adeniji Adele Police Division for further investigation and prosecution.

Emergency responders from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), promptly alerted by LASTMA personnel, arrived at the scene and transported the injured victim to the General Hospital in Odan, Lagos Island, where they are currently receiving emergency treatment.

In a statement following the incident, LASTMA General Manager Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki reiterated the agency’s commitment to road safety and the protection of lives on Lagos roads.

He condemned the reckless behavior that led to the accident and warned motorists against speeding.

“Speeding remains one of the leading causes of preventable road crashes in our state. Motorists must exercise caution and adhere strictly to traffic regulations,” Bakare-Oki said.

He expressed sympathy to the injured pedestrian and wished them a speedy recovery, while also praising the swift action of LASTMA officers in apprehending the fleeing suspect.
