Wife of the Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, has officially flagged off the Measles and Rubella vaccination exercise across the state, marking a significant step toward protecting children from vaccine-preventable diseases.

The Lagos State Government recorded a major milestone in the health sector with the introduction of the Measles and Rubella vaccine into the routine immunisation programme. The initiative aims to strengthen disease prevention, reduce childhood mortality, and safeguard public health.

The exercise was formally launched at the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Secretariat and attracted key stakeholders, healthcare professionals, community leaders, parents, and children, underscoring broad support for the programme.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery through strong partnerships, community engagement, and effective immunisation strategies.

She explained that measles and rubella vaccines are critical in preventing serious illnesses that can result in complications such as blindness, brain damage, miscarriage, and even death, stressing the importance of early and complete vaccination.

Parents and guardians were urged to ensure their children receive the vaccine, as healthcare workers will also conduct door-to-door visits to reach all eligible children and achieve full coverage across communities.

A major highlight of the flag-off ceremony was the official administration of the vaccine to children between the ages of nine months and fourteen years, symbolising the commencement of the statewide exercise.

The initiative reflects the Lagos State Government’s continued commitment to prioritising healthcare as a foundation for building a healthier and more productive population.
