The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has upgraded the Nigeria Police Force’s Legal Section to the Directorate of Legal Services as part of ongoing reforms to strengthen institutional capacity and improve operational efficiency.
The Directorate will be the Force’s apex legal arm, overseeing legal services, training, policy review, and engagement with prosecutorial bodies, the judiciary, and other justice sector stakeholders.
The move is aimed at giving the Force’s legal operations a stronger institutional identity and recognition both locally and internationally.
Egbetokun also appointed Assistant Inspector-General Ohiozoba O. Ehiede as the pioneer Director of the Directorate.
AIG Ehiede, described as a seasoned officer with a distinguished record, is expected to lead the Directorate in advancing justice delivery and raising prosecutorial standards.
The Police Chief said the reform reflects the Force’s commitment to aligning with global policing standards and ensuring professionalism, transparency, and efficiency in legal processes.
He urged officers, particularly police lawyers, to support the new Directorate in boosting prosecutorial success rates and public confidence in police operations.
