ECOWAS has dispatched a solidarity mission to Sierra Leone over an apparent coup attempt last Sunday, the 2nd similar event in the country within 3 months following the controversial presidential vote in June.
The political tension from the electoral dispute requires urgent attention to avoid escalation with 4 ECOWAS countries already under military rule.
The juntas in 3 of the 4 nations have signed a Defence Pact against external aggression. Niger junta has also terminated the country’s cooperation accord with the European Union European on illegal migration, while ECOWAS has failed to make good its threat to intervene militarily to restore constitutional order in that country.
