Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who defected to the All Progressives Congress have rejected calls to declare their seats vacant.
The lawmakers defended their decision to leave the Peoples’ Democratic Party at a rally in Port Harcourt organised to officially welcome them into their new party.
The defection of 27 lawmakers to defect from the PDP is seen as a move that could determine the outcome of the current power tussle.
The APC, determined to cash in on the new arrivals, is rolling out the
drums to receive them.
The party’s leadership condemned the demolition of the house of assembly complex saying the lawmakers would continue their sitting elsewhere.
The defection has elicited mixed reactions some of which are calling for the lawmakers to vacate their seats.
But they seem unbothered by the dust that has been raised by their
action insisting they are backed by law.
This rally gave members of the APC some hope that perhaps the party may be on its way to tasting electoral victory after many years.
