A non-governmental organisation, ActionAid, has distributed household items to help in resettling flood victims living in Internally Displaced Camps in Delta State.

However, the group wants government to provide relief for those whose means of livelihood have been destroyed by this year’s floods.

Ikenna Amechi reports that there are more than eleven IDP camps in Delta state housing more than 18000 persons displaced by floods.

Although the state government had taken precautions following early warning signs, several lives were lost with farmlands and property worth millions of naira swept away.

The waters are now receding and those who once occupied them are gradually returning to their homes.

For ActionAid, the distribution of household items is to help mostly women and children resettle into their communities.

The gesture of the NGO is appreciated and locals said many more interventions of this kind are needed.

The crisis of this year’s floods may not be forgotten in a hurry across several states in the country. As the rains intensified, several communities and towns across the country were submerged under water.

There are many more who may not be able to resettle without help of this kind.
