Ten people, including the suspected gunman, have been killed in a school shooting in the Austrian city of Graz, police have confirmed.
The attack took place on Tuesday morning at Dreierschützengasse secondary school in the city’s north-west. Authorities said seven of the victims were pupils, with 28 others currently receiving treatment in hospital.
The gunman, whose identity has not been released, was also among the dead.
Police responded to reports of gunfire shortly after 10:00 local time (09:00 BST) and launched a major security operation. A specialist Cobra tactical unit was deployed to the scene, and the building was evacuated.
A spokesperson confirmed the school had been secured and that there was no further threat to the public.
Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker said the shooting “strikes our country right at its heart”, describing the victims as “young people who had their whole lives ahead of them.”
Local mayor Elke Kahr called the incident a “terrible tragedy”, while European Commission Vice-President Kaja Kallas said she was “deeply shocked” by the events. “Every child should feel safe at school and be able to learn free from fear and violence,” she posted on X.
Investigations into the motive behind the shooting are under way.
