nigeria-senateThe Senate has approved two hundred and thirteen billion naira that’s about 213 million dollars on Wednesday to cater for sectors requiring critical attention.

But the approval did not come without opposition from some lawmakers who felt the request was unconstitutional.

After its interface with the Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government, the Senate Committee on Appropriation had given its nod to the executive’s request for 180 billion naira virement, but senators at plenary resolved to jerk up the amount by 33 billion naira.
However, some senators expressed reservations about Presidency’s request for virement just as Senate President, Bukola Saraki urged the executive to target the funding of local contractors as a way of pushing more resources to different areas of the country.

The Senate leadership says it will exercise its oversight powers to see that the contracts that will follow the approval will be through competitive bidding processes and is confident the projects will have a multiplier effect on the local contractors and impact positively on the economy.
