The Minister of Justice Lateef Fagbemi says that the Nigerian state rejects same-sex marriage as it is inconsistent with the country’s domestic laws.
The minister speaking at the 45th Universal Periodic Review in Geneva noted that the Nigerian laws are a reflection of the sentiment of the Nigerian people.
Nigeria had signed a bill prohibiting same sex marriage into law during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan with sanctions like fines and prison sentences with western nations like the United States all against the move.
The clarification from the minister will serve as a re-affirmation of the country’s stand on the issue.
