The call for a general strike by the civil society organizations in Goma has been halted by security forces in the country.
The civil society group’s plan to protest the national election commission’s schedule ahead of the upcoming elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was resisted by policemen deployed in the town to avoid such gatherings.
Attempts made by members of the group to gather for a demonstration was disallowed by Policemen who fired teargas to disperse the crowd.
MONUSCO’s Force Commander, General Derrick Mgwebi who flew over the city by helicopter to monitor the situation expressed the Police stance on the intended strike action saying they were out to maintain law and order.
Meanwhile, activities on the streets is quite low as shops, as well as some schools and offices remain closed .
