The Anambra State Police Command has identified a 28-year-old man as the masquerade performer accused of unleashing violence on residents of Awgbu community in Orumba South Local Government Area.

Police say the suspect, Ifesinachi Ezeolu, was behind a masquerade outing that sparked public outrage over alleged assault, intimidation and harassment in the community.

In a statement, Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga said the Command respects cultural and traditional practices but warned that no cultural activity should be used to shield lawlessness or abuse of citizens’ rights.

He stressed that masquerade displays, like all public gatherings, must be peaceful and conducted within the law, adding that any act capable of causing fear, injury or public disorder will not be tolerated.

Ikenga said investigations are ongoing to identify other suspects linked to the incident.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, assured residents that the Command will continue working with traditional rulers and community leaders to promote peaceful cultural practices while protecting public safety.

Police say further updates will be provided as investigations progress.
