The Plateau State House of Assembly has elected Hon. Daniel Nanlong, member representing Mikang Constituency and former Majority Leader, as its new Speaker.
Nanlong emerged unanimously during an emergency session held on Wednesday at the Assembly’s temporary complex located at the Old Government House in Jos.
His emergence follows the resignation of former Speaker Gabriel Dewan of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), who was the sole representative of his party in the 24-member legislature.
The leadership change is believed to be part of wider efforts to ease mounting political tensions in the state. It came after a closed-door meeting between Governor Caleb Mutfwang, Dewan, and other lawmakers aimed at resolving lingering instability.
Wednesday’s emergency sitting was presided over by Deputy Speaker Hon. Gwotta Ajang, who facilitated a smooth transition of power.
Dewan’s resignation is seen as a strategic move towards restoring unity and legislative focus in the state.
