Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has revoked the Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) earlier granted to the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA) by the administration of former Governor Godwin Obaseki.
In a revocation order dated 21 October 2025, Governor Okpebholo said the decision was made “in overriding public interest,” citing his powers under Sections 28 and 38 of the Land Use Decree No. 6 of 1978 (now the Land Use Act).
According to the governor, the land previously allocated to the Edo Museum of West African Art Trust (EMOWAA) Ltd/GTE has been reclaimed by the state government and will be restored to its original use as the Benin Central Hospital.
Meanwhile, the management of the Museum of West African Art, Benin City, has issued a clarification addressing what it described as “misconceptions” about its mission, ownership, and role in the cultural landscape of Benin City.
In a statement signed by its Director, Mr Phillip Ihenacho, and made available to The Nation, MOWAA reaffirmed its respect for the Benin monarchy, stating that it holds Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, the Oba of Benin, in the highest esteem.
“MOWAA remains committed to respectful engagement and to contributing collectively to the preservation and advancement of West Africa’s rich cultural legacy,” the statement said.
The museum also denied allegations that it had presented itself as the Benin Royal Museum to obtain funding, urging relevant authorities to verify directly with its donors that no misrepresentation had occurred.
In a separate statement, the Director of MOWAA Institute, Ms Ore Disu, reiterated the institution’s continued respect for Oba Ewuare II and its commitment to promoting understanding and goodwill within the community.
