The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle A. Nafiu, has called on the Public Service Institute of Nigeria (PSIN) to design tailored, sector-specific training programmes for Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) across the country.

He said such an approach would better address the unique operational needs of each establishment and significantly boost PSIN’s relevance and patronage among government institutions.

General Nafiu made the call during a courtesy visit by the Administrator and Chief Executive Officer of PSIN, Barrister Imeh Okon, to the NYSC headquarters in Abuja.

Emphasising the need for a more focused capacity-building strategy, the NYSC boss proposed that PSIN should consider training a select group of essential personnel within each agency to serve as ad-hoc instructors.

These individuals, he noted, could then assist in facilitating subsequent training sessions tailored to the specific needs of their respective organizations.

“The NYSC, for instance, has very unique operational requirements that general public service training modules may not adequately cover,” General Nafiu said.

“Without sector-specific focus, it becomes difficult to justify or sustain consistent engagement with PSIN programmes.”

While reaffirming NYSC’s commitment to staff development and capacity building, he also pledged support for collaborative efforts with PSIN, particularly in areas that align with the Scheme’s mandate.

Barrister Okon, who recently assumed office as PSIN’s Administrator/CEO, said her visit was aimed at strengthening institutional ties and fostering collaboration between PSIN and the NYSC.

She emphasised the institute’s core mission to build the capacity of Nigeria’s public sector workforce through targeted training, research, and innovation.

She also outlined various programmes offered by the institute in leadership, digital literacy, entrepreneurship, and customised training packages — which she said would be of great benefit to both NYSC staff and Corps Members.

Barrister Okon expressed hope that the NYSC would key into PSIN’s vision of a more professional and efficient public service through regular and relevant training interventions.

General Nafiu congratulated the PSIN boss on her appointment and lauded her early engagement with key stakeholders.

He expressed optimism about her tenure and wished her success in advancing the institute’s objectives.
