South Korea’s Ministry of Unification says North Korea and South Korea have agreed to hold the long-waited high-level talks on Tuesday.
Last Monday, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said his country was willing to send a delegation to the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, a move welcomed by his South Korean counterpart, Moon Jae-in.
The following day, Seoul offered to hold high-level talks with Pyongyang officials to find ways to cooperate on next month’s tournament.
These efforts could offer possibilities of better ties after a year that saw a nuclear standoff increase fear of war on the Korean Peninsula.
And, ahead of the Korean high level talks, nuclear envoys of Japan and South Korea met in Seoul on Monday.
They are to discuss the North’s nuclear issues and share views on situations on the Korean Peninsula.
The ramped-up momentum for inter-Korean dialogue follows a year of missile and nuclear tests by North Korea.
It also followed an exchange of hostile comments between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, which raised alarm across the world.
