NEMA warns of moderate, high risk flooding in 11 Oyo LGs

The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA has revealed that 11 out of the 33 LGs in Oyo state are at high and moderate risks of experiencing flooding in the year 2024.

The Director General of NEMA Zubaida Umar made this known while speaking at a sensitisation programme held in Ibadan; the Oyo state capital.

According to the 2024 Seasonal Climate Prediction and Annual Flood Outlook, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency predicted that 148 LGAs in 31 states are within high flood risk areas, while 249 LGAs fall within moderate flood risk areas.

Oyo State has 11 LGAs listed under high and moderate risk.

The affected LGAs include Itesiwaju, Ona Ara, Lagelu, Ibarapa Central, Kajola, Egbeda, Ogbomosho South, Ogbomosho North, Iseyin, Ibarapa North, and Ibarapa East.

Speaking at a sensitistion programme in Oyo state the NEMA DG advised who live in these areas to take early actions against this coming disaster for their own safety.

Chairmen of these LGAs, alongside the management of the Oyo State Emergency Management Agency were present at the sensitization program and pledged to work together to avert the predicted disaster.

Following the sensitisation, residents in Oyo State are expected to take necessary precautions to avert the predicted disaster.
