Nigeria’s Agricultural Seeds Council has begun raiding markets for fake and adulterated seeds.
This follows executive assent of the seeds act twenty nineteen, which has stiffer penalties for dealers of adulterated seeds.
Nigeria’s executive only recently signed the country’s seed bill into law thereby, repealing the seed act of twenty fourteen.
The new seed act has provision of jail terms or fines of up to and above one million naira for defaulters.
Nigeria’s annual seed demand is about four hundred thousand metric tonnes.
But domestic output which stands at about eighty thousand metric tonnes falls short of this demand.
This is one of the reasons why fake and adulterated seeds have flooded the country’s markets.
