Mexico secured their place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Ecuador at Estadio Azteca.
First-half goals from Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez put the co-hosts firmly in control, and they comfortably saw out the second half without facing any serious threat from Ecuador.
Ecuador’s woes deepened in stoppage time when Piero Hincapie was shown a red card after covering his mouth during a confrontation.
The match began an hour later than scheduled after thunderstorms in the area forced FIFA to delay kick-off.
