Legal practitioners in Rivers State have advocated for a return to sound academic values by students in commemoration of the 2017 Children’s Day.
The group known as the international federation of women lawyers achieved this through the second edition of its spelling bee competition in Port Harcourt.
TVC News Uche Okoro reports that the Port Harcourt secretariat of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA played host to 15 schools selected from across Rivers State to participate in the spelling bee competition.
Speaking on the motive behind the initiative, organisers say the use of social media has eroded the knowledge of English language in the younger generation.
At the end of the first and second rounds of the spelling bee competition four out of the 15 contestants had been eliminated.
Eleven contestants continued into the third round but finally Nathaniel Ihunda of Faith Baptist College claimed the first position, Esther Chukwuemeka of Holy Rosary Secondary School came second while Sarima Wokocha, student of Brainforte High School came third.
Also at the event, Joy Sampson, a student of Faith Baptist College delivered a keynote address on the topic ‘raising the bar in the protection of the rights of children’.
She identified violence against children and abuse of their rights as one of the biggest problems affecting families and societies.
