The singer took to Twitter this week saying that she suffers from the disorder and she is hoping to raise more awareness about it.
What is fibromyalgia and what causes it?
Fibromyalgia is a disorder that causes widespread musculoskeletal pain throughout the body.
The chronic pain is typically accompanied by extreme fatigue, mood, memory and sleep problems.
Researchers believe that fibromyalgia might be influenced by the pain receptors in the brain.
These receptors heighten the bodies response to pain and change the way the brain responds to these triggers.
The disorder occurs in five million Americans but only affects about ten percent of males.
Experts don’t know yet what causes fibromyalgia. Some potential triggers could be genetics, infections or physical trauma to the body.
What are the symptoms?
The main symptom people with fibromyalgia experience is severe pain across their entire body.
People have described the pain as a dull ache that can last for three months or longer if more severe.
Those with the disorder also experience extreme fatigue even if they get a lot of sleep in the night.
Pain can disrupt sleep and make it hard for the person to fall or stay asleep for long periods of time.
A lack of sleep can also negatively impact someone’s health because the body needs it to function.
People with fibromyalgia are more likely to have other sleep disorders such as restless leg syndrome and sleep apnea.
The disorder can also co-exist with other problems including irritable bowel syndrome, migraines and joint problems.
How can it be treated?
In general, medication and self-care is used to help minimize the symptoms.
There is currently no cure to get rid of all symptoms of fibromyalgia.
Medication options available for people with the chronic pain are pain relievers, antidepressants and anti-seizure.
Those medications can help reduce the feeling of pain and also help the person sleep.
Other forms of treatment available for sufferers are doing pain therapy and workouts such as yoga.
Getting massages can also relieve some of the tension that is caused from the pain.
