It’s 2020! Nigeria has joined the rest of the world to welcome the new year.
New Zealand and Sidney were among the first set of countries to usher in the new year.
In Sydney, citizens ushered in the 2020 with an attempt to create the brightest light beam in the southern hemisphere shining from the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Soaring temperatures in the day and bushfires did not stop the crowds flocking to the harbour as more than 100,000 individual pyrotechnic effects illuminated Sydney’s skies.
The fireworks were launched from seven barges around the harbour, as well as the iconic Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge.
The Sydney Harbour Bridge was the focal point for the show, with thousands of fireworks exploding from the coathanger.
Sydney decided to press ahead with its fireworks display despite calls by some members of the public for it to be cancelled in solidarity with fire-hit areas in New South Wales, of which the city is the capital.
