5 prison inmates have been electrocuted at the Nigerian correctional service, Ikoyi Custodial Centre.
The inmates were electrocuted in their cells following a power surge Monday morning
Seven others suffered various degrees of injuries.
TVC news’ Yusuf Akogu who visited the facility reported that the cell the incident happened was congested.
The news crept out of the hidden.
Bad as it sounded, worse it was about the condition of the facility.
The cell meant to accommodate 35 inmates ended up having 140 inmates locked up at the time of the incident.
confirming the incident, the minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola who commiserating with the family of the deceased, restated his commitment to improving the welfare of inmates across various correctional Services in the country.
Ikoyi Medium custodial centre was built in 1955 to house 800 inmates but as today, there are 3113 inmates, 2680 of these numbers are awaiting trial.
