The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to tackling terrorism and banditry across the country, assuring Nigerians that efforts to restore peace and security remain a top priority.

According to a report by The Punch, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, gave the assurance on Friday while speaking at the Peace and Security Summit Award in Abuja.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Office of the SGF, Aminu Yar’Gaya, Akume said the government is more determined than ever to eliminate terrorism and banditry.

He also urged the media to support the Federal Government through balanced and responsible reportage, stressing that journalists have a critical role to play in the fight against insecurity.

Akume further called on the media to work closely with the military and other relevant stakeholders in efforts to address the country’s security challenges.

“We are concerned about reportage of banditry and terrorism in the country, we are not saying attacks should not be reported but all sides should be reflected.

“Stories of terrorism should be reported in a fair manner on the part of our gallant military and the victims.

“Government is doing a lot regarding the fight against terrorism and banditry and we are determined to do more,’’ he said.

The convener of the summit, Ms Jennifer Serrano, said the event could not have come at a better time, given the country’s current security challenges.

According to her, all Nigerians must come together to support government’s effort to bring terrorism and banditry to an end.

Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Defence, Rep. Benson Babajimi, said the legislature remained open to partnerships that would strengthen the nation’s laws, deepen national cohesion and ensure lasting peace.

Babajimi, who was represented by his deputy, Rep. Ahmad Kalambaina, said that the summit was timely and essential at a time when the nation was facing deepening security and social challenges.

“In our society, peace and security are not just words, they are the true foundation of unity. Without peace, our laws and policies cannot work.

“As lawmakers, who make laws that safeguard everyone, we must build a country where every person feels safe in their home and community.

“Hosting this summit underscores the recognition that the primary business of government is law and order, and by government, I mean the executive, the legislature and the judiciary.

“This security summit is an important part of the ongoing engagement with stakeholders on the security concerns of our nation.

“Let me say that, today’s event represents a significant step towards redefining the national security arrangements for peace and unity of our country,’’ he said.

The lawmaker noted that effective security of a society was dependent on the level of security consciousness of the citizens and the understanding that exists between the security agencies and the community.

He said that greater commitment to security and crime prevention had become imperative in view of the country’s current security challenges.
