EU announces $29.24m emergency aid package for Northeast

Image result for bail of dollarsThe European Union Commissioner for crisis Management has announced a first emergency aid package of 29.24 million dollars for 2020.

The money is to help alleviate the impact of the crisis in the North East that has affected millions of people with the provision of food aid, education, shelter, access to healthcare, clean water and sanitation.

Moyo Thomas reports that 2019 saw an upsurge in violent attacks in the North East and this has significantly increased the Humanitarian needs in the region.

More than seven million people are in dire need of assistance, this is apart from the people in territories still under the Boko Haram insurgency. The crisis has also led to the death of over 37 thousand civilians and about 12 aid workers.

The killing of the aid workers has been condemned by authorities and the United Nations and the EU has also condemned the killing as it undermines the international humanitarian law.

Despite this, the European Union Commissioner pledges the unwavering commitment of the EU to Nigeria especially in overcoming this scourge

Humanitarian aid from the EU since 2014 has reached over 850 million dollars, making the agency one of the highest donors to humanitarian needs in the country, a gesture Nigeria appreciates

The speakers say strategizing beyond military fight is necessary as tackling the root cause- poverty, will further help to end the crisis.
