The Edo State Government has reconnected to the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) for power supply, five years after it broke the company’s monopoly by supporting the construction of Ossiomo Power.

The reconnection follows the shutdown of Ossiomo Power on September 1 due to an ownership dispute between the firm and its Chinese partners, Jiangsu Communication Clean Energy Technology (CCETC).

Ossiomo Power, which generates 95 megawatts of electricity, had been supplying power to government offices, the Government House, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) secretariat, private organisations, and streetlights across the state.

Director-General of the Edo State Electrification Agency, Saturday Omozokpea Egbadon, confirmed the switch, saying power had been restored to some streetlights and government buildings, with the process still ongoing.
