Gombe State Governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo, has called on the federal government to ensure that all camps for internally displaced persons are closed before the end of the year. He made the call while receiving the operations manager of the National Emergency Management Agency at the government house in Gombe State.

TVC News Lanre Adeyemi reports that the visit by NEMA officials was meant to introduce the new operations manager in charge of Gombe and Bauchi State to officials of Gombe State government.

But Governor Dankwambo’s mind was on other national issues: the war against insurgency and the millions of people affected by it.

There have been allegations of rape, abuse and diversion of materials in the camps where these internally displaced persons live.

As part of the federal government rehabilitation programme, Governor Dankwambo is also asking for the repair of critical infrastructure destroyed by insurgents in Gombe State.

Based on United Nation’s data, there are about 1.9million displaced persons in Nigeria. Reintegrating this large number would reduce the burden on government and enable them to become productive contributors to the nation’s economy.
