The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has issued a directive halting the supply of crude oil and gas to the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, in protest over the recent dismissal of hundreds of workers.

The union’s action follows the alleged termination of over 800 staff by the refinery on Thursday, a move the company described as part of a “strategic reorganisation” to address internal security breaches and operational disruptions.

In a memo signed by PENGASSAN General Secretary, Comrade Lumumba Okugbawa, and addressed to branch chairmen in key oil companies—including TotalEnergies, Chevron, Shell Nigeria Gas, Oando, Renaissance, and Seplat Producing Nigeria Unlimited, the union ordered an immediate suspension of all crude oil and gas loading operations destined for the refinery.

“INGC chairman, ensure that gas supply to the refinery is cut off effective immediately,” the memo stated.

PENGASSAN described the layoffs as unjust and unacceptable, especially without prior consultation with the union.

While the refinery claims the staff cuts were necessary to address “repeated acts of sabotage” and ensure workplace safety, labour leaders have rejected that justification, demanding immediate reinstatement of the affected workers and calling for transparent engagement.
