A colleague of the late nurse, Mary Habila, has filed a sworn affidavit detailing the final moments of the nurse who was attached to the medical team of the Minister of Works, David Umahi.

According to a report by TheCable, on Thursday, the affidavit, deposed by Anita Baaki, a physiotherapist from Benue State, was filed before the Ebonyi State High Court on Wednesday.

TVC News Online reports that Habila, a staff member of the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital, Ebonyi, died on June 27 during an official assignment in the state.

Baaki said she travelled with Habila and other ministry staff from Abuja to Ebonyi on June 24 for official duties. They were accommodated in separate but adjoining rooms at a staff chalet within Umahi’s country home in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area.

She clarified that the chalet is designated for ministry staff and associates and is not the minister’s personal residence.

According to the affidavit, Baaki last saw Habila alive on the evening of June 26 after she returned from having her hair done.

“Mary told me she was tired and wanted to take a shower before sleeping. That was the last time I saw her alive,” the affidavit read.

Baaki said she became concerned the following morning after Habila failed to come out of her room as expected.
She said repeated phone calls and knocks on the door went unanswered, prompting her to alert a domestic staff member to help search the premises.

When Habila could not be found elsewhere, other ministry staff members were informed, and the room was forced open.

Baaki said Habila was found unconscious near the door and was immediately rushed to the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival.

She stated that her affidavit was made voluntarily and without coercion to assist official investigations into the circumstances surrounding Habila’s death.

Meanwhile, the Ebonyi State Police Command said it would proceed with its investigation into the death despite the family of the deceased registering its opposition to it and demanding that the body be released to them for burial.
